M4 Junctions 12 to 13: Redhill and Dark Lane (Bradfield) – Bridge Refurbishment

Updated: 16/6/2017 with amended closure dates

Long-term monitoring has found that the two bridges which carry the M4 over Ashampstead Road and Dark Lane, near Bradfield in West Berkshire, require extensive repair due to chloride-induced corrosion.

To address these defects and ensure the structures remain in a safe and serviceable condition Kier Highways Ltd, on behalf of Highways England, will be undertaking the following works:

 m4traffic

  • Replacing the beams along the central reserve and longitudinal and transverse joints
  • Replacing the waterproofing material
  • Replacing the existing safety barrier (VRS) over the bridge central reserve

The scheme is scheduled to start in mid-February 2017 and is expected to take seven months to complete.  Work will primarily be undertaken during day time hours, however some activities will be carried out at night when necessary.

Weekend Closures

Works include the closure of the M4 east and westbound carriageways between junctions 12 and 13 for entire weekend periods (9pm Friday through to 5am Monday).  The weekend closures are currently scheduled for:

  • Friday 5 May to 7th May - Cancelled

  • Friday 19 May to Monday 22 May 2017 - Cancelled

Update: 19/4/2017

"M4 Junctions 12 to 13: Bridge Refurbishment – Update
Planned works over the first weekend closure were completed successfully and we’d like to thank you for your patience during this period.
Overnight on Friday 31 March, the team removed the safety barrier and manoeuvred the cranes into position, allowing work to the beams to be undertaken on Saturday. The barriers were reinstated and the closure lifted by midday on Sunday 2 April.

Upcoming Weekend Closures (M4 and M3)

Highways England’s M3 junctions 2 to 4a smart motorway project will be installing the new Woodlands Lane Bridge, which crosses over the M3 near Windlesham.
After further liaison between Highways England, its contractors and local stakeholders, it has been agreed that we will cancel the planned M4 weekend closures of 5 to 8 May and 19 to 22
May to allow the M3 team to install the bridge.

Therefore the next weekend closure of the M4 is planned from 9pm on Friday 12 May through to 6am on Monday 15 May 2017* (57 continuous hours), with a contingency weekend proposed for Friday 2 to Monday 5 June 2017.

Confirmed dates for this closure will be displayed in advance on signs along the M4.

Delays will be expected during this weekend closure and it is advisable that you plan ahead of your journey or avoid this route where possible – depending on your final destination, we would advise you to allow an addition 30 to 40 minutes for your journey."
